Description
Croft House is a house dating from the 17th century, with alterations made in the 18th century. It is constructed of squared rubble with stone dressings, and has a stone slate roof. The gable end faces the street. The front, overlooking the garden, has two storeys and three bays, with an additional bay to the left evident by a butt joint. The central entrance has a chamfered surround and a 17th-century decorated lintel featuring a star-like stop at the top of each jamb. The door is six-panelled, with the upper two panels glazed. To the left of the entrance is a former four-light double chamfered mullioned window on the ground floor, of which only the central mullion remains, now fitted with 20th-century casements. To the right is a two-light double chamfered mullioned window, likely originally three-light, with a repositioned central cavetto mullion; the left-hand light is fixed, and the right-hand light has sash windows with glazing bars. On the extreme right is a blocked ground floor fire window. On the upper floor, to the left is a late 17th/early 18th century three-light chamfered window, and to the right of centre is an 18th-century three-light flat-faced mullioned window. Both upper floor windows have central eight-pane sashes and 20th-century casements. A late 19th/early 20th century upper floor window with sashes and glazing bars is on the far right. Quoins are present. There is a gable end stack to the right and one at the former left-hand gable, now situated at the junction with an 18th-century extension, which is believed to have been a former peat house, now featuring a chamfered ground floor window and a 20th-century upper floor window with a concrete lintel. Inside, one fireplace has a moulded surround and corbels, and a flat arched lintel with an imitation keystone and an incised rose motif.
