Description

Sheviock Barton Farmhouse

Farmhouse dated 1682 (scratched on stone beside the front door), possibly of earlier origin, with late 18th century and mid 19th century alterations and additions, and some 20th century changes. The building is constructed from slatestone and sandstone rubble, partly rendered, with a slate roof and clay ridge tiles.

The original plan comprised three rooms and a through passage, with the lower end to the right heated by an end stack, and the hall and inner room to the left, with the hall served by a rear lateral stack and the inner room probably originally heated by a gable end stack. In the late 18th century, a two-storey wing of one-room plan was added to the rear of the hall and inner room, containing the staircase, with a half-hipped end and external stack.

Attached to the left end and projecting forward is a barn, originally of single storey but raised probably in the mid 19th century. This barn incorporated part of the inner room and was formerly used as living accommodation in the section adjoining the main range of the house. In the mid 19th century, the lower end was remodelled with ceiling heights probably raised in the ground and first floor rooms. Later in the 19th century, a barn was added to the end of the lower end at a lower roof level.

The front elevation is two storeys. The hall and inner room are lit by 20th century two-light casements with timber lintels, and the lower end room has a two-light casement with a brick head. The door to the passage has a glazed panel and a pitched slate hood on wooden piers. At first floor, there are three 20th century two-light casements, one above the passage with a heavy timber lintel, and at the end right, a 16-pane sash in a gabled dormer.

The barn attached to the right has a central double door and loading door above, with six-pane lights to right and left featuring stone wedge-shaped heads and a half-hipped roof to the end right. The right end of the house is rendered with a rendered end stack. The barn projecting to the left has a formerly blocked doorway with a buttress on each side and a doorway to the right. The gable end of this barn was rebuilt in 20th century blockwork with a garage entrance, and an addition at the end has a corrugated iron roof. The left side of the barn has a horizontal sliding sash of 15 panes each and a three-light casement with timber lintel, both under the eaves, formerly lighting the living end of the barn. The rear end of the barn has a ground floor two-light casement with a chamfered timber lintel.

A rendered two-storey wing to the rear of the hall and inner room features a 16-pane sash at ground floor and two 20th century windows at first floor, with a 20th century window at ground floor to the left of the stack at the end. A single-storey outshut runs along the rear of the lower end and passage, with two casements, also rendered.

Interior: The barn attached to the front left has a slate floor and a 19th century roof with a four-bay structure, principal rafters and tie beams, and two rows of purlins. One early truss at the house end features principals crossed at the apex with a cambered, chamfered collar, dating from the raising of the walls from single to two storeys, probably in the 18th century. The hall retains a mid 19th century fireplace to the rear lateral stack. The lower end room was completely remodelled in the mid 19th century. The remainder of the house is not fully accessible.
