Description

Providence House is a house built around 1780, constructed of red brick in Flemish bond with a stone slate roof. It stands three storeys high and has three bays. The central entrance features a 20th-century six-panel door with an original overlight set under a lintel with a keystone. On either side of the entrance are 19th-century canted-bay windows that contain four-pane sashes. The first-floor sashes have glazing bars, while the second-floor sashes have six panes. All windows are topped with incised lintels that include keystones and stone sills. There are projecting white-painted stone bands at the first and second-floor levels. A fire insurance plaque is located on the first floor to the left, and above and to the right of the front door is a stone plaque inscribed 'Birth place of John Hughlings Jackson 1835-1911'. The house has a hipped roof and side stacks. To the left, there is a lower two-storey range with side-sliding sash windows. The interior retains original doors and a staircase. John Hughlings Jackson was a notable figure in the medical profession, as noted in the Dictionary of National Biography from 1901-11.
