Description
Numbers 9 and 9A are a shop and flats, dated 1736. The building features painted render with painted stone dressings and a slate roof that is hipped on the left side. It stands three storeys tall, with facades that have chamfered quoins, moulded cornices, and casement windows with architraves. The ground-floor windows and corner doorway from the 20th century are set back into openings created by square piers with alternating rustication. There are painted stone semicircular blind arches that spring from these piers, three on the east facade and four on the south facade, which appear to have been open in the past. Both facades consist of three bays, with no windows above the left-hand ground-floor opening on the south facade, and the left-hand first-floor window on the east facade is also blind. The entrance to No.9A is set back to the left, adjacent to No.10 Market Place. Above the doorway, there is a fixed window with plain reveals, and above that is an 8-pane sash window. On the right side of the south facade, there is a rainwater hopper inscribed 'IP 1736'. The building has chimneys on the right-hand gable and at the left, rising from the front wall. The interior has not been inspected, but a dogleg stair with closed string and turned balusters is visible through the doorway of No.9A. No.9A was listed on June 20, 1972.
