Description

ULVERSTON

SD2878 MARKET PLACE 626-1/3/62 (East side) 02/03/50 Nos.9 AND 9A

GV II

Shop and flats. Dated 1736. Painted render with painted stone dressings and a slate roof, hipped at the left. 3 storeys. Facades have chamfered quoins, moulded cornices, and casement windows with architraves. The C20 ground-floor windows and corner doorway are recessed into openings formed by square piers with alternating rustication. Painted stone semicircular blind arches spring from these piers, 3 to the east facade and 4 to the south facade. These appear to have been formerly open. Both facades are of 3 bays: there are no windows above the left-hand ground-floor opening of the south facade. The left-hand first-floor window of the east facade is blind. Set back to the left, adjoining No.10 Market Place (qv) is the entrance to No.9A. Above the doorway there is a fixed window with plain reveals, and above that there is an 8-pane sash. To the right of the south facade is a rainwater hopper inscribed 'IP 1736'. Chimneys on right-hand gable and at left, rising from the front wall. INTERIOR: not inspected. A dogleg stair with closed string and turned balusters is visible through the doorway of No.9A. No.9A was listed on 20.6.72.
