Description

No. 1 King Street is a shop with accommodation above, built around 1840, likely by George Webster. The building features limestone ashlar and roughcast with slate roofs and stands three tall storeys plus an attic. It occupies a corner site with two main facades, each having two bays. The southern facade faces the Market Place, while the eastern facade faces King Street.

On the ground floor, both facades have ashlar dressings and a timber shop front with a central doorway flanked by pilasters and a fascia. The upper storeys are adorned with glazing bar sashes set in narrow painted surrounds with projecting sills. Each gable, designed as a pediment with projecting verges and plain barge-boards, includes a frieze decorated with laurel garlands. At the top of each gable is an ashlar chimney cap with a cornice. An oculus in the south gable provides light to the attic.

The corner where the two facades meet is recessed and curved, featuring rusticated stonework on the ground floor. The King Street facade has an additional bay on the right, which includes a tall ground-floor window, a glazing bar sash on the second floor, and a 20th-century tilting window with glazing bars on the first floor. The roof slope includes an attic dormer, and there is a chimney on the right side.
