Description

No. 10 Market Place is a chemist's shop with accommodation above, possibly dating from the mid-19th century, but incorporating elements from the 18th and 17th centuries. The building features painted scored render, a slate roof, and yellow brick chimney caps. It stands two storeys high with an attic and occupies a prominent corner site, displaying a two-bay gable facing King Street.

The first-floor windows are 6-pane sashes with plain reveals, while the attic is illuminated by a single round-headed window with Gothick glazing. On the ground floor, there is a shop window with plain reveals to the left and a timber shop window with glazing bars to the right. A similar window faces south towards the Market Place. The entrance doorway is set at a 45-degree angle between the two shop windows. A continuous timber entablature connects the two facades and is inscribed with 'PATENT MEDICINES TEA OIL DRUG WAREHOUSE'. Above the doorway, there is a large curved sign-board and a pestle and mortar. Above the southern window, there is another 6-pane sash with plain reveals.

Adjoining No. 9A Market Place at right angles is a gabled single-bay wing, which features a 5-panel door on the ground floor, a glazing bar sash above on the first floor, and a small opening within the attic gable. There are chimney caps on the ridge to the left of this bay and on the gable facing King Street. A rear wing faces north towards a yard that opens into Lower Brook Street and includes chamfered mullioned windows of 17th-century style and a slated door canopy.
