Description
Nos. 2 and 4 King Street is a shop with accommodation above, possibly dating from the late 17th century, with alterations from the late 19th century. The building features scored painted render and a slate roof, and it has two storeys. Most of the ground floor is taken up by a shop front that includes a timber fascia and cornice. On the first floor, there are three window openings with plain reveals and projecting sills; the right-hand window is blank, while the others have sash windows. No chimneys are visible. The rear wall reportedly has irregular fenestration and a slate canopy over a doorway.
Inside, the building has a complex evolved interior. The ground floor fittings are related to its former use as a chemist's shop. The upper floors maintain a domestic character, featuring hearths with moulded surrounds and cast-iron hob grates from the late 18th or early 19th century, decorative plaster cornice work, and a moulded 18th-century door surround. Access to the attic storey is through a doorway with a broad planked door. The roof trusses have principals rising from wall corbels, possibly indicating the remains of tie beams, with nailed collars. One truss is closed with exposed studwork.
