Description
No. 1 Market Place is a shop with accommodation above, dating from the mid-19th century, although it incorporates earlier elements. The building is constructed of stucco and features a slate roof with a brick chimney cap. The east gable wall, which faces Market Place, is two storeys high plus an attic.
The ground floor has a mid-19th century shop front that includes two engaged Greek Doric columns, a projecting timber cornice, and a fascia with a modern sign-board attached. On the first floor, there are two sash windows without glazing bars, featuring plain reveals and projecting sills. The attic contains a single window similar to those below, but it has a round-arched head and is partly set within the gable, which has overhanging bracketed verges. The projecting timber gutters on the side walls return, giving the gable the appearance of an open pediment, and a chimney cap rises from the apex of the gable.
Historically, although the exterior appears to be from the 19th century, a painting of the Market Place from around 1780 depicts a brick building of the same shape, number of storeys, window positions, and chimney position.
