Description
Priory Close Cottage and the adjoining outbuildings are located in Lower Allithwaite, Cartmel. This property dates back to the 17th century and may be built on medieval foundations. The house features roughcast stone, while the outbuildings are constructed from stone rubble, all topped with a slate roof.
The house is two storeys high and consists of three bays, with a cowhouse to the north that has two bays, and a barn further north. On the west elevation, the windows are mostly casements, but the first bay on the first floor of the house has a sashed window with glazing bars. A 20th-century flat-roofed porch with glazed doors is present. The cowhouse includes a sashed window with glazing bars and two entrances, while the first floor has inserted 20th-century sashed windows with glazing bars. The interior features a stone floor. The barn has an outshut under a catslide roof and a return garage door.
Notably, there is a medieval corbel with foliate decoration beneath the window on the first floor of the first bay. The property has a cross-axial stack and a gable-end stack, each with two rounded shafts. The east elevation displays varied fenestration with casements, and the barn includes an entrance and ventilation slots, along with a gabled wing at the end. This property is included for its group value.
