Description
The Village Institute, which includes Priory Footwear, is an early 18th-century building located in Lower Allithwaite, Cartmel. It features roughcast stone with ashlar dressings and a slate roof. The structure is two storeys high with an attic and consists of five bays. The ashlar base, bands over the windows, and cornice are notable architectural details, along with the quoins. The round-headed windows have imposts and keys and are sashed with glazing bars. The attic contains hipped dormers that have slate-hung cheeks and horizontally sliding sashes with glazing bars. The entrance is distinguished by an eared architrave, panelled pilasters, a pulvinated frieze, and a consoled segmental pediment with a fanlight. There are gable-end stacks, while the left return of the building is blank. The interior was altered in the 19th century when it became the Institute, and the dormers were likely added during this time.
