Description

This listing describes two houses and a barn, likely built in the late 17th century or early 18th century, located to the south-west of number 123 on Lower Holker Station Road in Cark-in-Cartmel. The buildings are constructed of roughcast stone, while the barn features stone rubble with quoins and a slate roof.

The houses are two storeys tall and consist of four bays, with the barn situated at the south-west end. The north-west elevation displays irregular window placements. On the ground floor, the first bay has a window with small-paned fixed glazing and an opening light; the second bay features a casement window, and the fourth bay has an opening without a frame. The first floor includes two sashed windows, with the first bay window having vertical glazing bars and horns, and the second bay window having thick glazing bars. Additionally, there are two windows with small-paned pivoted casements. The entrance to the first bay has an ovolo moulded opening, raised at the centre of the lintel, while the third and fourth bays have chamfered openings. A large projecting gable-end stack with set-offs and a cross-axial stack are also present.

The south-east elevation shows varied window placements, including a three-light single-chamfered-mullioned window on the first floor, with the end bay breaking forward. Inside the first cottage, there are fielded panelled partition walls with dado and cornice, two panelled doors with architraves and dados, and a fireplace with a panelled surround and fluted key, along with a cast iron grate. A cupboard to the right features H-hinges, and the rear room contains a fireplace with a crane and a later copper placed in front. The staircase has a two-panel door, and the first floor has plank and muntin partitions with a winding stair.

The barn consists of four bays, with the first bay being roughcast and featuring a stone stair leading to the first floor entrance. The barn entrance has quoins, a segmental arch, and a pentice. The rear elevation of the barn has an outshut under a catslide roof.
