Description

Mill House is a house built around 1782, located in Cark-in-Cartmel. It is constructed of roughcast stone and features a slate roof. The building has two storeys and three bays, with a single-storey wing to the right that also has three bays. The windows are sashed with glazing bars, although the first bay on the ground floor has a casement window in a reduced opening. The central entrance is adorned with Tuscan columns that have fluted capitals, a frieze with rosettes, a pulvinated panel, and a pediment. The right wing has two windows with 19th-century small-paned fixed glazing, one of which includes an opening light with a cornice, while the other has small-paned fixed glazing. The house features gable-end stacks and a cross-axial stack. The rear of the house is three storeys high due to the slope of the ground and has varied fenestration along with two entrances. Mill House was built for the owner of Cark Cotton Mill, which was also constructed around 1782, and it is the only remaining building from the mill complex.
