Description

Cark House is a farmhouse, likely dating back to 1689 with significant alterations in the late 18th century. A datestone on the rear outshut confirms the earlier date, while the front range is characteristic of the late 18th century. The house is constructed of stone rubble, likely originally roughcast, with ashlar dressings and a slate roof. It is three storeys high and five bays wide. A first-floor sill band, cornice, and moulded gutter run along the front facade; quoins are present, with the left-hand end breaking back. The windows have stone surrounds with projecting edges and are sashed with glazing bars. A central entrance is framed by Tuscan columns, a frieze, and a pediment, topped with a half-glazed panelled door. The property has gable-end stacks and a cross-axial stack. The rear elevation features an outshut with a catlside roof and sashed windows with glazing bars and horns. The right return has an entrance with moulded reveals and an embattled lintel bearing a date. A recessed bay is visible on the left, with the end breaking back. The interior remains unexamined.
