Description
Mitre House is a house dated 1663, located on the east side of Market Square in Kirkby Stephen, with later additions. The building features slobbered rubble sides and a pebble-dash front, with the quoins concealed by rusticated stucco end pilasters. It has a graduated slate roof with brick end chimneys and stands 2½ storeys tall with 3 symmetrical bays. The central door, which is part-glazed and from the 20th century, is flanked by lights and has a dated lintel above it. Panelled pilasters support a cornice. There is a single tripartite sash window on either side of the door and three sashes on the first floor. The top floor has three windows of reduced height, with their sills resting on the lintels of the first-floor windows. All windows have plain stucco surrounds. Inside, only the hall retains its original cornice. Extensions added around 1930 to the rear of the property are not included in this description.
