Description
This building is a shop located at the north-east corner of Market Square in Kirkby Stephen, dating from the 18th century with later alterations. It is constructed of coursed rubble and features chamfered quoins. The hipped roof is covered with graduated slate and has a central stone chimney. The shop has three storeys and projects into the square at right angles to the main road.
The west elevation consists of two bays with a Victorian shop front, and there are two sash windows on each upper floor. The north elevation has been remodelled in the 20th century and originally featured four bays, with three doors and four sash windows on each upper floor, although some of these have since been blocked. At the east end, there are steps leading down to a cellar, which has an original head from a renovated perpendicular church window reused as a balustrade. The east end also has stepped buttressing. This building is included for its group value.
