Description

Kirkby Stephen War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1920, located in the Market Square of Kirkby Stephen, Cumbria. It is prominently positioned at the center of the town. The memorial features a Lazonby sandstone cross pattée on a tapering shaft, set on an octagonal plinth and a three-tiered octagonal base. The plinth displays inscriptions on bronze panels with white-painted lettering. Plaques commemorating the Second World War were added around the uppermost riser edges of the tiered base. The inscription reads: TO/ OUR/ GLORIOUS/ DEAD/ 1914 – 1919// (NAMES)// 1939 –1945/ (NAMES).
