Description
This building is a shop located at the southwest corner of Market Square in Kirkby Stephen. It was originally two separate properties that were combined in the third quarter of the 20th century.
The northern property, associated with Tom Brodrick, is dated 1817, as indicated by a reset rainwater head in the gable. This section has been extensively altered in the second quarter of the 20th century and features pebble-dash walls. It has a graduated slate roof with stone copings and kneelers at the gable end, along with a stone chimney at the west end. The building is two storeys high, with some re-used Victorian mullions in the shop front that projects on the east and north elevations. The first floor contains two windows in the gable end and four windows on the north elevation.
The southern property, formerly the Old Grammar School, was once part of Croft House, which is listed separately. This section dates back to the 18th century and has undergone later alterations. It is constructed of slobbered rubble with a rounded corner and some incised stucco on the south elevation. The roof is graduated stone-flagged with a stone chimney at the west end. This part of the building is also two storeys high and features a gabled porch on the east elevation with a small window above it. The south elevation has two sash windows on the ground floor and one sash window on the first floor.
