Description

This house, originally an inn, stands on Market Square in Kirkby Stephen, running behind numbers 36 Market Square and 20 Market Street. It dates to 1636 and 1830. The exterior is finished with incised stucco, and the roof is graduated stone-flagged with a central brick chimney. The south end of the building, a three-story section, was altered in the 19th century, with a rainwater head dated 1830. A through passage features a lintel inscribed with initials and the date 1636, displaying a four-centred arched head and single sash windows to each upper floor. The two-story north end has a single sash window on each floor. Inside, the north end room contains an 18th-century fireplace with a moulded surround and cornice. A 17th-century floor-standing cupboard is built into the north wall of the middle room.
