Description

This building, located to the rear of number 16 on Market Street in Kirkby Stephen, dates back to 1795, as indicated on the rainwater head. The structure has a rubble wall that was stripped of render in 1983. The roof was re-slated in the 20th century and currently has no chimneys. The house is two storeys tall and has four bays.

An inserted doorcase, which is traditionally said to be from Hartley Castle, features a lintel dated 1719 and is adorned with reeded and fluted engaged columns that support an open segmental pediment. There is one window to the left and two windows to the right of the door, with four additional windows on the first floor. All windows have timber lintels. The door, sash windows, and gutter are all from the 20th century.
