Description
Croft House and the adjacent shop, previously listed as Croft House/premises occupied by Brown, butchers, is part of a large house that has been subdivided, with other parts listed separately. The building dates from 1789 and 1826, as indicated on the rear. It features incised stucco with chamfered quoins at either end and a graduated slate roof with stone chimneys at the mid and end. The early 19th-century front has seen later alterations and consists of three storeys with a total of seven bays.
At the north end, there are cast-iron railings and two doors positioned side by side. The left-hand door is adorned with a projecting Tuscan porch, flanking lights, and a rectangular fanlight. Each upper floor has two sash windows, with 12 panes on the first floor and 9 panes on the top floor. The hall contains some re-used 18th-century panelling. The south end of the property features a projecting shop window, recessed doors, one 16-paned sash window, and one 8-paned sash window. The first floor has four 12-paned sashes, while the top floor displays four trompe l'oeil 'windows'. The building also has first-floor bands and a moulded cornice supported by paired block corbels.
