Description
The King's Arms Hotel is a hotel built in the late 18th century or early 19th century, with later alterations. It features rendered rubble construction and chamfered quoins at the south end. The roof is made of graduated slate, hipped to the south, with a stone chimney at the north end. The building has three storeys and six bays.
To the right of the panelled door with a rectangular fanlight, there are three sashes with glazing bars. To the left, there is a single bow window with glazing bars and a single 16-paned sash. A Tuscan porch above the door supports a two-storey projecting bay window. Each upper floor has three sashes with glazing bars, all of which have stone surrounds. A large painted inn sign is attached to the middle of the upper wall, and there are pavement gratings leading to the cellarage.
Inside, the hotel retains panelled doors within reeded doorcases throughout. The staircase features squared wooden balusters on a cut string with scrolled tread-ends. The landing has a Corinthian cornice, and a small saucer-dome with diagonal ribs is supported by thin fluted columns, which are said to be remnants of an 18th-century powder closet.
