Description
The building is a bank, constructed in 1903 by John F. Curwen, located on Market Street, Kirkby Stephen. It is built of ashlar stone with a corbel table and battered buttresses to the ground floor. The first floor is pebble-dashed with some ashlar at the base of the chimney stacks. Two gables face the front, and the roof is slate-covered, with a hipped section to the north. The chimneys are rendered and sit atop tall stone stacks at the front and sides, featuring finials and large scrolled brackets to the barge boards. The building is two storeys high and has a gable window design, with four bays, although the northern two bays are set back. A planked door with a segmentally headed fanlight is located on the north end's left side. An inset five-light bow window is adjacent to the door, and a similar window is on the south end, featuring a glazed door and a rectangular fanlight to its left. The first floor has a mix of one- and two-light windows, with the southern window having a five-light design and a small semicircular pediment. Single four-light windows are present in each gable. The ground floor windows contain leaded lights. Contemporary wrought-iron railings are present at the front, incorporating plain standards, inverted heart finials, and scrollwork.
