Description
The Black Bull Hotel is an early 19th-century hotel with later alterations, situated on Market Street in Kirkby Stephen. The building has three storeys and four bays, topped with a graduated slate roof. The north bay features incised stucco with stucco voussoirs above a segmentally-headed carriage arch, a stone end chimney, and a single 16-paned sash window on each upper floor. The remaining three bays are symmetrical and constructed of coursed rubble, with a plinth and rusticated end pilasters, and brick end chimneys. On the ground floor, there are paired sash windows on either side of a panelled door, which is topped by a rectangular fanlight within a Tuscan porch. Each upper floor has three sash windows, all of which are framed with stucco surrounds.
