Description

The Old Stables, located approximately 50 metres northeast of Levens Hall, are former stables that have been converted into houses. They date from the mid-16th century, with some remodelling occurring in the late 17th century. Attached cottages are situated to the northwest and south, and the buildings were converted to houses in the mid-20th century.

The structure features stone rubble walls with sandstone dressings and a steeply-pitched graduated greenslate roof with a stone ridge. It has two storeys and an entrance front facing east, which includes eight irregularly placed windows, consisting of 2- and 3-light casements with chamfered stone mullions, along with four board doors set in chamfered stone surrounds. The garden front also has eight irregular windows, primarily 2-, 3-, or 4-light casements with leaded glazing and chamfered stone mullions, some of which are from the 20th century. There are original vent slits on the upper storey and a glazed door from the 20th century within a corniced moulded surround.

The gate piers at the northeast corner are part octagonal, featuring moulded shafts topped with ball finials and flanked by semicircular-headed blank niches.
