Description

The Old Stables at the site of the former Newland Hall is a building that dates back to the 18th century and was altered in the 19th century. Originally built as stables or a coach-house, it has since been converted into a house, although it was derelict at the time of the survey in 1986. The structure is made of sandstone ashlar and features a stone slate roof. It has a rectangular plan, is two storeys high, and consists of seven bays arranged symmetrically in a classical style. The central three bays are slightly projected and topped with a pediment.

On the ground floor, there was once a continuous arcade of round-headed arches with imposts, stepped voussoirs, and raised keystones. However, this has been altered, with some arches covered by added canted bays (in bay 1 and bays 4 and 5), while bay 2 has been changed to a door and bays 3, 6, and 7 have been modified into windows. Most of the windows are damaged and all glazing is missing. The pediment features a circular raised medallion, and the gable ends have copings with kneelers and gable chimneys. The left return wall includes an added canted bay, while the right return wall has a blocked arch similar to those at the front. The rear of the building has vertical rectangular windows, some of which have raised surrounds. The interior has also been altered and damaged.
