Description
Aqueduct Cottage, located between the River Calder and the Aire and Calder Navigation Basin, was built around 1839 for the Aire and Calder Navigation Company. This canal office or cottage is constructed of ashlar stone and features a Welsh slate roof, part of which is missing. The building is designed in a classical style and is a single storey with a symmetrical three-bay facade. The central feature is a tetrastyle Doric portico, which has square outer piers and inner fluted columns that support an architrave, frieze, and triangular pediment. The doorway is framed with an eared architrave and is flanked by small blocked windows within the portico, with additional blocked windows in the left and right bays. A small cornice runs along the eaves, and there is a central stack. The left and right returns of the building also have pediments, with a blocked doorway on the right return and a blocked window on the left. There is a small addition at the rear, which is partly collapsed and may be contemporary to the main structure.
