Description

This is a milepost located outside No 220 on Aberford Road in Stanley. It dates from the mid to late 19th century and features a cast-iron triangular front mounted on a stone post with a rounded top. The raised letters on the milepost indicate the following: "WAKEFIELD & ABERFORD ROAD STANLEY," "WAKEFIELD ABERFORD 2 MILES," and "OULTON 3 MILES." This milepost marks the route of the Wakefield and Aberford turnpike road, which was established in 1788/9.
