Description
This is a group of former canal navigation cottages and workshops, now converted into five dwellings, built in 1802 for the Aire and Calder Navigation Company. The buildings were altered in the 1980s. They are constructed of coursed squared stone with stone slate roofs. The buildings are arranged symmetrically, consisting of a three-bay central house that slightly projects from the two flanking six-bay cottages. The former seven-bay workshops are set back on either side, with nine-bay and seven-bay cartsheds attached to the left and right respectively. The buildings are two storeys high. The central house has a central door, while each of the six-bay ranges has two symmetrically placed doors, each with an overlight. The windows are mainly four-pane or twelve-pane sash windows, with some casements containing glazing bars. The window openings have plain raised surrounds. End stacks are present on the central house. The former workshop ranges have a large segmental-headed cart entry in the centre (now glazed), with a smaller round-arched former loading door above (now a window), both set within alternately blocked raised surrounds. There is a loading door to the first floor at the inner end of each workshop range, with the original stone steps now removed. The roofs are hipped. The cartsheds have cylindrical stone piers with square caps, those on the right now glazed and with mono-pitched roofs. Attached to the left cart shed are a pair of square gate piers constructed of rusticated ashlar, with a monolithic upper section featuring a sunk panel containing a roundel. The piers have a moulded cornice with guttae and a blocking course.
