Description
Kirkthorpe Weir and sluice gates are located across the River Calder and were likely built in the second quarter of the 19th century, with the sluice gates dated 1827. The structure is made of ashlar and cast iron. The weir features a segmental curve with eight steps, flanked by curved retaining walls made of large ashlar blocks on both the west and east sides. At the eastern end, there are three sluices separated by six giant stepped buttresses, which have pointed-arched cutwaters on the south side. The two original sluice gates are equipped with circular winding gear and a large cog wheel, with plates displaying the relief lettering "HEWES & WREN MANCHESTER 1827" on each face. This is a significant engineering achievement, and the sluices are still operational. The site is partly within the parish of Stanley.
