Description

Heath Hall Farm Barn and attached farm buildings consist of two barns positioned at right angles to each other, along with outbuildings that include a dovecote. These structures date from the mid-17th century and mid-18th century, with some mid-20th century conversion work to create a dwelling. The buildings form a U-shaped block and are constructed from hammer-dressed stone, with some brick at the rear of the added 18th-century barn, which faces a walled garden. The main ranges have a 20th-century Bradstone roof, while the two lower outbuildings feature stone slate roofs.

The 17th-century barn on the left has two 18th-century additions at right angles. One of these additions includes a pair of low arched doorways with an impost band and a pedimented gable featuring a bullseye. To the right, there is a stone stair leading to a first-floor doorway at the junction with the added 18th-century range of seven bays. This range has doorways with monolithic jambs alternating with square windows, and square windows above with plain-stone surrounds, filled with wooden latticed ventilators.

At right angles to this barn, forming the third side of the courtyard, is a building that features a stone stair to a first-floor doorway and two additional doorways to the right, one of which leads into the dovecote. This building has a coped gable with kneelers. The rear of the main barn also has similar tall cart-entries and ventilators. The left end of the barn has been converted into a house, featuring four bays of sash windows with lintels and sills, along with two windows above. The left-hand return of this range includes five bays with inserted ground-floor doorways and windows, while original square windows remain on the first floor. The right side has a hipped roof and two ridge stacks.

Inside the 17th-century barn, there are principal rafter roof trusses supported by large curved angle braces. The added 18th-century range features a fish-bone king-post roof with a large wooden wheel hoist. The large barn at right angles to this range has fine fish-bone king-post trusses with an extra king-post on either side and angle struts.
