Description
Nether Levens Farmhouse, along with an attached store to the north, is a farmhouse that was originally part of a larger complex, which is now in ruins. The building features initials and the date T & AP 1594 on a panel in the gable above the entrance. Establishing the exact chronology of the building is challenging; the southern part likely dates to the early 16th century, while the addition of the wing and crosswing to the north probably occurred in the mid and late 16th century, respectively, with later alterations. The structure has stone rubble walls with red and yellow sandstone dressings, a graduated greenslate roof with stone ridges, and five chimneys, four of which have massive, tall round shafts on square bases. The farmhouse has an irregular plan and stands two storeys high. Its fenestration is scattered and includes various styles from the 16th century onwards, mostly featuring mullion-and-transom windows under hoodmoulds. Inside, many original features remain, such as exposed beams, a staircase with turned balusters, fireplaces, a garde-robe, and a panelled room on the upper floor. For further details, refer to the R.C.H.M. pages 155-156, which also includes a floor plan, although the dating shown may not be accurate.
