Description
Levens War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1921, located in the churchyard of the Church of St John the Evangelist on Church Road in Levens, Cumbria. It is prominently positioned at the south-east corner of the church, next to the path that encircles the building. The memorial features a stone wheel-head cross with raised detailing, set on a tapering shaft and moulded foot. This is mounted on a tall, wide, four-sided tapering plinth with a moulded foot, which stands on a three-stepped square base. The plinth displays inscriptions on two bronze panels attached to the front face. The raised cast bronze lettering reads: "THESE MEN OF LEVENS/ GAVE THEIR LIVES/ FOR KING AND COUNTRY/ 1914 – 1918/ (NAMES)// AND THESE GAVE THEIR LIVES/ IN THE WAR OF 1939 – 1945/ (NAMES)."
