Description
High Barns Farmhouse is a farmhouse that likely dates back to the early 18th century, although a 20th-century plaque above the front porch states the year 1612. The building has undergone later alterations, including a single-storey extension on the left side and an outshut added to the rear. The walls are made of roughcast rendered rubble, and the roof is covered with graduated greenslate. It features two stepped, projecting end chimneys with slate drips and paired round shafts. The farmhouse is three storeys high and has three windows, which are 2-light casements with chamfered stone surrounds, flat mullions, and leaded lights.
The central porch, which is gabled and from the 20th century, has an inner door that is boarded and made of oak with studs. The outshut at the rear has a similar door that has been re-hung using the original strap hinges. Inside, there is an oak staircase that runs the full height of the house, featuring a closed string, square newels, and turned balusters. The living room includes an 18th-century fireplace with a corbelled head and oak beams. The first-floor landing has 18th-century panelled doors, which may have been brought from another location.
