Description
The West Portal to Hincaster Tunnel is a canal tunnel portal completed on Christmas Day in 1817, designed by engineer Thomas Fletcher. It is constructed from tooled, dressed limestone and features a limestone string course, coping, and a rounded fender course. The portal has a horseshoe arch made of rusticated voussoirs and a keystone, which is flanked by tapering pilasters. Above the arch, there is a blank panel that was likely intended for an inscription. The canal is currently dry.
