Description
The walls, gatepiers, gates, and lamps at the front entrance to Burton House are likely from the late 18th century, with some later alterations. The walls are made of square coursed limestone, featuring limestone dressings and dressed sandstone terminals and piers. The lamps are cast iron, while the gates are made of timber. The curving walls are approximately 1200mm high and include a plinth and coping. Each wall has square terminals, which have a base and a corniced top, topped with a lamppost that holds an octagonal lantern. The gatepiers are square in plan with chamfered corners, a base, and a corniced top that is surmounted by a shallow pyramid. There are four gates: a single gate on each side between the wall and the gatepier, and paired gates between the piers, featuring square uprights, a ramped top rail, and closely spaced vertical slats that taper above the middle rail. This structure is included for its group value.
