Description

Brackenthwaite Farmhouse and adjoining barns date from the early 18th century, with the barns specifically dated 1859 inscribed above the entrance. The farmhouse has painted roughcast walls with a cornice at the eaves and painted vertical quoins. It features a Welsh slate roof with sandstone slate along the lower courses, coped gables, kneelers, and cement-rendered chimney stacks. The barns and stables are constructed of coursed red and yellow sandstone under sandstone slate roofing, with the stables under Welsh slate.

The farmhouse is two storeys high and has two bays, with a lower barn to the left which has been partially converted into a house extension. An adjoining T-shaped barn is set at a right angle, forming an overall U-shaped plan. The farmhouse entrance features a panelled door within a shouldered bolection architrave, topped with a panel frieze and console bracketed cornice. Sash windows with glazing bars are set in painted stone architraves. The left-hand barn has 20th-century doors and windows within painted stone surrounds. One door has a reused Tudor-arched lintel dated and inscribed “I & M I 1667 (Jefferson?)". A projecting cart entrance has plank doors to the left. The stable has a half-plank door and slit vents. A stone mounting block is built against the front wall to the left. The barn has a segmental cart entrance, a plank door to the right, a loft above, and slit vents below the eaves.
