Description

Branthwaite Farmhouse and the adjoining barns and byres date back to 1658, as indicated by the inscription on a ceiling beam. The farmhouse features cement-rendered walls set on large projecting plinth stones, with roofs made of graduated greenslate and 19th-century yellow-brick chimney stacks. It is a two-storey, three-bay structure, accompanied by a lower contemporary barn on the left and a late 17th-century barn with a common roofline on the right. There is also a lower right-angled 19th-century byre extension, creating an overall U-shape.

The farmhouse has 20th-century doors and sash windows framed in 19th-century painted stone surrounds. The barn on the left includes a former cross-passage entrance with a plank door beneath a shaped lintel, along with two ground floor doorways that have lofts above, featuring chamfered surrounds under Tudor arches. The upper floor has slit vents. The barn on the right contains chamfered doorways and small loft openings, with external stone steps leading to a loft door. The end wall on the right has a two-light stone-mullioned window, and the rear has a bank entrance to the loft. The byres are equipped with plank doors.
