Description

The former farmhouse and adjoining barn known as Billy Yard, located north-west of Branthwaite House, dates back to 1693, as indicated by the inscription over the cross-passage entrance. The structure is built from a mix of limestone and cobble rubble, resting on large projecting plinth stones. The roof has been removed from the house, while the barn features a roof made of graduated greenslate and Welsh slate.

The building is two storeys high and has three bays, with the lower barn situated to the right. The cross-passage entrance is framed by a stone architrave and features an inscribed lintel. There is a later central entrance that has had its surround removed. The windows on the upper floor are chamfered-surround with stone mullions, although one is blocked. There is also a small fire window on the ground floor to the right.

The barn includes three chamfered entrances and lofts, all topped with Tudor arches. Inside the house, there is a stone heck partition and a wooden firebeam. A settle back, which was inscribed and dated 1660 (Scott), has been removed but suggests that the house may date back to the mid-17th century. At the time of the survey, the building was derelict and unoccupied.
