Description
Westknowe is a farmhouse dated 1763, located in Irthington. It features rendered walls with stone dressings and a Welsh slate roof that has coped gables and kneelers, along with one stone chimney stack and one 20th-century brick chimney stack. The building is two storeys high and has four bays. A projecting gabled porch with a slate roof is situated at the front, with a 20th-century door on the right side. The windows are 2-pane sash windows with plain stone surrounds, and the east gable has a filled attic window.
Adjoining the farmhouse at the rear are farm buildings that form a square farmyard. These buildings are constructed of sandstone rubble and have graduated slate roofs. There is an arched cart entrance on the east side and a corresponding flat arch on the west side. The west range includes a 20th-century door and garage doors, while the east range retains original plank doors for the lofts and stables. The north range features plank doors, slit vents, and several filled doorways and arches.
