Description
The Hethersgill War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1920, with additions for the Second World War. It is made of Aberdeen granite and is prominently located facing the main road within the churchyard of the Church of St Mary. The memorial features a wheel-head cross with a central boss and Celtic knot-work relief on the arms. It has a short, tapering shaft adorned with intricate knot-work carvings and sits atop a tapering plinth with a moulded foot for a base.
The plinth includes an incised granite plaque with the inscription:
IN MEMORY OF / THE GLORIOUS DEAD / 1914-1918 / [names] / GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS / THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS.
On the rear of the memorial, there is a further inscription commemorating an individual:
IN LOVING MEMORY OF / A [name] / OBIT 22ND MARCH 1921.
The left side of the plinth features the Second World War inscription:
IN PROUD / REMEMBRANCE OF / [names] / WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR / 1939-1945.
