Description
Manton War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1920, with an addition for the Second World War. It is located in the churchyard of the Grade II*-listed Church of St Mary, positioned to the north-west of the bell tower and visible from the street.
The memorial is made of rough-hewn Cornish granite and features a wheel-head cross with a tapering four-sided shaft. On the south-west face, there is a relief carving of an inverted Sword of Sacrifice, which has a trefoil design on the pommel and the ends of the cross-guard. The cross shaft rises from a tapering, four-sided plinth that sits atop a single-stepped, square base.
At the base of the cross shaft, on the south-west face, is a small recessed panel that reads TO THE/ GLORY OF GOD/ AND. The dedication continues on a recessed panel on the plinth, stating IN HONOURED MEMORY OF/ THE MEN OF THIS PARISH/ WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914-1918/ (6 NAMES). All dedications are presented in leaded lettering.
Additionally, a small metal plate is affixed directly below the sword, which bears the Second World War dedication in incised lettering: 1939 - 1945/ (2 NAMES).
