Description

Four houses forming a terrace, built in the 1830s in Carlisle. They are constructed using Flemish bond brickwork, a pattern where alternating headers (short ends of bricks) are highlighted, with Nos. 46 and 48 having a rendered finish over the brick. The houses sit on a chamfered stone plinth and have Welsh slate roofs that are shared between Nos. 44 and 48, with original brick chimney stacks.

The terrace steps down with the slope, so No. 50 has a lower roofline. Each house originally had two bays and steps lead up to paired panelled front doors (except for No. 48, which has a single door). The doors are flanked by pilastered surrounds featuring false keys and impost stones, with the right-hand doorways leading to through-passages. The windows are sash windows; No. 44 retains its original glazing bars, No. 46 has glazing bars on the upper floor and an inserted double sash window on the ground floor, and No. 50 retains shutter hinge blocks on its ground-floor window. The interiors have not been inspected. An 1840 tithe map shows the existence of these properties.
