Description

The farm buildings located to the south-east of Newbiggin Hall Farmhouse are a range of agricultural outbuildings dating from the early to mid-19th century, with some 20th-century alterations and additions. They are constructed from regularly-coursed and squared rubble sandstone, featuring ashlar dressings and slate roofs, with the roof of the two-storey section laid in diminishing courses.

The layout is L-shaped, with a two-storey cowhouse facing north-east and a single-storey stable and cart lodge extending north-east from the south-east end of the cowhouse. The cowhouse consists of four bays and has two tiers of breather vents for the over-lofts on either side of the first-floor doorway. There are two ground-floor doorways and a 20th-century lean-to at the north-west end. The stable range includes an open cart bay at the junction of the two ranges and an enclosed cart shed at the opposite end, which has boarded double doors. The stable frontage features three doors, with the central door being a split door that is wider than the other two, which have boarded doors with slit vents.

Inside, there are 20th-century stable and stall fittings, and the roof carpentry is contemporary, with plain tie beam trusses in the cowhouse that do not have collars. These buildings are listed for their group value with Newbiggin Hall Farmhouse and the attached outbuildings, contributing significantly to the setting of Newbiggin Hall.
