Description
This range of farm buildings, located approximately ten metres east of Newbiggin Hall, is likely from the late 17th century and has undergone some alterations in the 20th century. Built for the Salvin family, the structure features squared sandstone with a corrugated asbestos roof. The hall front is 1½ storeys high and consists of six bays. It has three quoined and chamfered doorways, with the central doorway featuring a plank door, while the end doorways are partly blocked by pivoting windows. There are two ventilation slits between the central and right end openings, and three slits to the left. The building has coped gables and shaped kneelers. The yard front mirrors the hall front but includes a cart opening beneath a timber lintel to the left of the centre. Inside, there are five collar trusses with tenoned and pegged apexes. This building is recognized as a very early example of a planned, purpose-built farm building range.
