Description
Swarth Howe Cross is a boundary stone located in Egton, dating from the early to mid-18th century. It is made of gritstone and features a square-section column that stands approximately 1.25 meters high, set in a square socket stone. The stone has inscriptions on its west face, south face, and north face, which include the years 175?, G.K.?, 1774, EGTON, 1799, ROAD, 1821, 1841, and 185?. This stone is situated on the site of the medieval Swarth Howe Cross, as noted by S. White in "Standing Stones and Earthworks on the North Yorkshire Moors."
