Description

Croft House is an early 19th-century house that was later used as Croft House Academy for boys, with additions dating to circa 1840. The building has stucco walls featuring raised painted quoins, and a graduated slate roof with stucco and brick chimney stacks. The central section is recessed and two storeys high, with three bays, and is flanked by projecting gabled extensions: a single-bay extension to the left and a two-and-a-half-storey, two-bay extension to the right. All the windows are sash windows with glazing bars, set within moulded stone surrounds. The academy was established in 1840 by Joseph Coulthard, and notably educated Thomas Ismay, the founder of the White Star Line, and Sir William Stephenson, Lord Mayor of Newcastle.
