Description
This is a terrace of four houses, numbers 54 to 60 Etterby Street, located in Stanwix, Carlisle. They were built in the 1830s. The houses are constructed with Flemish bond brickwork, featuring lighter-coloured bricks in the horizontal bands, and sit on a chamfered red sandstone plinth. Number 54 has been rendered in a plaster finish. The roofs are graduated greenslate, except for number 54, which has a Welsh slate roof. Original brick chimney stacks are visible at the ridge and ends of the terrace, some of which have been plastered over.
Each house has two bays and two storeys, and they are arranged in pairs to reflect the slope of the hill. The main entrances are generally on the right-hand side of each house (except for number 58, which has its main door on the left). The doors are largely replacements from the 20th century, with some original radial fanlights (decorative semi-circular windows above the doors) contained within surrounds featuring decorative pilasters, false keys, and imposts. Houses 56 and 60 have paired doorways, with the right-hand door providing access to a through-passage. The windows are sash windows, with double-width windows on the ground floor. They are set within painted stone architraves, although the surrounds on number 54 are plain. The interiors of the houses have not been inspected. The houses appear on an 1840 tithe map, indicating their presence and established use at that time.
