Description

A terrace of 16 houses, with two additional houses on Chiswick Street, forming an overall L-shape, was built in the late 1840s. The buildings are constructed of Flemish bond brickwork, featuring light-coloured brick headers on a chamfered plinth. The dressings are of calciferous sandstone, though mostly painted, and there is a stone eaves cornice. The roof is of Welsh slate, hipped at the end of the terrace, with some skylights and a gabled roof dormer on number 17. Original shared brick chimney stacks remain.

The houses are two storeys high, with two bays each. Each has a left-hand panelled door and overlight within a Tuscan porch. The windows are sash windows, some with glazing bars, set within brick reveals, stone sills, and flat brick arches. Numbers 9 and 25 feature canted bay windows, and number 21 has a full-height bay window constructed of red sandstone.

Numbers 1 and 3 Chiswick Street are similar in detail, with three bays each and a central doorway. Number 1 has a partly mansard roof with gabled dormers. The window above the archway beyond number 3 belongs to number 5 in Chiswick Street. Number 1 Chiswick Street has a single-bay return fronting onto Spencer Street, adjoining number 33 Spencer Street.

Number 1 Spencer Street was demolished in the late 1960s to allow for road widening.

The terrace appears on Asquith's survey of 1853. The interiors have not been inspected.
