Description

A terrace of eight houses located at 6-20 Hartington Place, dating to the late 1850s or early 1860s. The houses are constructed of Flemish bond brickwork, with some featuring light-coloured brick headers, set upon a chamfered stone plinth. The dressings are of calciferous sandstone, and there are stone-bracketed metal gutters. The roofs are of Welsh slate, with two houses featuring gabled dormers and the others with skylights; shared ridge chimney stacks are constructed of brick.

Each house is two storeys and two bays, of similar design and detail, some arranged in pairs. The doors are panelled, with overlights within Tuscan doorcases; houses 6 to 14 have dentilled cornices. Canted bay windows are present, with those of numbers 6 and 8 extending to the full height of the building. The remaining windows are sash windows, some retaining original glazing bars, set within brick reveals with flat brick arches and stone sills. The interiors were not inspected.

Historical records, including Asquith's Survey of Carlisle from 1853, show the street layout but no buildings; the 1865 First Edition Ordnance Survey map depicts the terrace as a cul-de-sac.
