Description

Nos 45 and 47 on Kirkgate are two late 18th-century houses that form part of a notable group. They are cement rendered with slate roofs and stand two storeys tall, featuring a moulded eaves cornice. No 45 has a carriage entrance on the left with a three-centred arch and V-jointed voussoirs, a panelled door framed by moulded stone architraves, and two sash windows on the ground floor, along with four above, all set in moulded stone frames. No 47 is distinguished by its projecting stone quoins with V joints, a central panelled door with a round fanlight set in a round-arched doorway flanked by Tuscan pilasters and topped with an open pediment. It has two sash windows on the ground floor and three above, also in moulded stone frames.

In front of these houses is a long and narrow cobbled forecourt that extends from Nos 27 to 55, without divisions or railings, and is open to the pavement. Together with Nos 13, 17 to 25 (odd), 31 to 55 (odd), 38, 46 to 86 (even), Nos 47A, and Kirkgate House, they form a cohesive architectural group.
